Michael Fox’s colorful nesting and colliding forms are the visual anchor of Pilchuck’s 2007 auction. Fox deconstructs archetypal centerpieces (bowls and vases) into basic geometric elements (sphere, hemisphere and cone). He then recombines these elements to create striking modern forms. The bold color palette is inspired by the primary colors of flags, reflecting the international origins of the students of Pilchuck Glass School.
Fox’s design for the 2007 centerpieces was selected by a jury of local artists, curators and collectors. Fox says he feels honored to be recognized by Pilchuck and to have the chance to work with
a talented group of 24 volunteer glassblowers. He found the experience of collaborating with the team to be deeply moving. “It is so rewarding to see the designs take tangible form through the hard work and talent of the Poleturners. The finished pieces are even better than I imagined, and that is because of the talent, input and dedication of the entire team. Thanks everyone for your hard work, and special thanks to gaffers Jay MacDonell and Jason Christian.”
Fox has been affiliated with Pilchuck since 1992, first as a student, then as a teaching assistant and summer-staff member. He has been part of the Seattle glass community for many years. Early on he worked
on the research and development team for Dale Chihuly. Currently he is the studio manager at Benjamin Moore, Inc. where he facilitates the work of artists Benjamin Moore, Richard Royal, Dante Marioni, and Preston Singletary.
The centerpieces are available in a variety of colors and sizes, so be sure to take time to discover your favorite!
